Favourite moment from Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Can we take a moment to realize that out of ALL THINGS TO POSSIBLY WATCH Steve watches Saw?

Except this isn’t a reference to Saw. It’s from a 1983 movie called WarGames. (Clip here.)  

A kid unwittingly hacks into a military supercomputer that was designed to predict the outcomes of a potential nuclear war. He decides to “play a game” with the computer— the ”game” being Global Thermonuclear War. World War III almost happens because of it.

Considering all that happened in The Winter Soldier, the reference is rather fitting.

Yep, that’s the film she was referring to. The thing in WarGames is, that the only way to actually win the game is to not play it. As in: don’t make a move, because everything you could do, will be worse than the status Quo. 

Seeing as they literally are talking about an algorithm that can predict the future in TWS and WOPR, the computer from the film is designed to predict the outcome of a war, this is an unwittingly fititng comment by Natasha.

Also: we saw Steve arguing with Fury about Project Insight, how that’s not the right way to go about things, that aggression can never be a valid way to PREVENT aggression and the whole moral of WarGames is, that you can only win the game, by not playing the game.

And looking at the ending? Steve “wins” by refusing to “play” the Soldier’s game…
